Abstract
Food is one of the essential elements that involve sustaining the lives of human beings. That is why there have always been ethical issues related to all kinds of food and food industries. In the past, consumers bought food straight from the producer, or they planted their own crop. In such cases, people knew what they are eating and where the food comes from. Lately, however, there was a substantial development in the food industry, and the food supply chain no longer can be represented as a simple, straight line. The crops from a farm are not consumed directly by people but indirectly as meat, milk, eggs, and specially processed foods. The complexity of food chains provides anonymity to the food ingredients. Also, it is hard to know which food is safe since there are too many ingredients in one food. Such changes in the food industry made our life more convenient but also drove us to a battlefield. It is worth noting that Kosher foods attract more people's attention within this challenging moment. Kosher foods were initially for the Jews. Nowadays, however, more people are turning to Kosher foods despite their higher prices. They chose Kosher foods not for religious reasons but because of the strict food laws and the certification that Kosher foods maintain; they think these foods are safer, healthier, and of better quality. Besides, only 8 percent of people who eat Kosher food are religious Jews. This thesis points out why people prefer buying Kosher foods over regular foods. The answer could be simple; people want safer foods. We need to learn how strict the Kosher foods are. We need to learn their spirit. We have rights to eat clean and safe food. From producer to consumer, we ought to change the food system. Our ethical standards should be higher. Eating safe foods, it is all in our hands.
