본고의 목적은 “인공지능 시대에 인간본성에 정초한 존엄성 개념은 폐기되어야 하는가?”의 문제를 검토하는 것이다. 앞으로 인간본성을 모방한 인공지능이 출현하게 되면 인간-기계 사이의 경계는 무너지게 되고, 인간의 특별한 가치 개념은 위태로워질 수 있다. 즉 “인간은 인간과 동등한 혹은 인간을 압도하는 기계보다 더 존엄하다 할 수 있는가?”하는 의문이 들 수 있다. 이것은 인간의 독존적 가치에 대한 오래된 통념과 상충되고 있어, 이러한 의문이 풀리지 않는다면 향후 우리는 혼란을 겪을 수 있다. 이에 본고는 첫째, 우리에게 친숙한 인간존엄성 개념의 역사적 배경(근대)과 철학적 근거(칸트의 정당화)를 검토함으로써 그 숨은 의미를 확인한다. 둘째, 위의 문제와 관련하여 전개되고 있는 철학적 입장, 세 가지(근대휴머니즘, 트랜스휴머니즘, 포스트휴머니즘)를 제시한다. 셋째, 찰스 테일러의 시각에서 위의 문제에 관한 기존 입장들의 한계를 비판하고, 아울러 인간본성에 정초한 인간존엄성 개념을 계속해서 정당화할 수 있는 대안적 입장을 모색해본다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explore the issue of "Should we discard the concept of dignity based on human nature in the age of artificial intelligence?". In the future, the emergence of artificial intelligence imitating human nature will lead to the collapse of the boundary between human being and machine, so the concept of human special values (dignity) will be jeopardized. That is, the question of "Can humans be more dignified than machines equal to or overwhelming to human beings?" may arise. This runs counter to the old common sense of human intrinsic values, and if this question is not solved, we may suffer confusion. In this context, this paper first identifies the meaning of the human dignity concept as we are familiar with it, by reviewing the historical background("modern") and the philosophical rationale("Kant’s justification"). Second, this presents three philosophical positions that are being developed in relation to the issue: "modern humanism", "transhumanism" and "posthumanism". Third, from Charles Taylor's point of view, this criticizes the limitations of the existing three positions on the above matter, and seeks an alternative position that can continue to justify the concept of human dignity based on human nature.
