질서와 조화에 대한 관념은 동양은 물론, 서양의 정신사에서도 공통된 주제였다. 그런데 이 개념은 서양에서 중세의 몰락과 근대 자유주의와 개인주의 사상의 등장으로 심각한 위기에 직면하게 된다. 왜냐하면 개인주의와 자유주의는 근본적으로 다양성과 다원성을 추구하기 때문에 전체와의 조화나 질서를 추구해왔던 이상과는 상충하기 때문이다. 서양의 정신사는 이러한 문제를 이신론 또는 자연신학을 통해 극복하고자 했다. 이 글은 근대의 이신론에 기초하여 애덤 스미스의 대표 저작인 『도덕 감정론』을 검토함으로써 ‘애덤 스미스의 문제’로 불리는 오해를 바로 잡고, 그 동안 학계에서 상대적으로 소홀히 해왔던 애덤 스미스의 도덕 철학을 살펴보려고 한다. 특히 그의 도덕 철학 체계에서 중심을 이루는 승인과 부인, 공감과 공정한 관망자 개념이 자기애적인 개인이라는 개념과 어떻게 수미일관하는지에 대해서 검토할 것이다. 그의 도덕 철학 체계를 검토함으로써 우리는 그의 윤리 사상에 존재한다는 일반적인 편견, 즉 이기적인 개인과 이타적인 인간이라는 상호 모순되는 관점이 서로 충돌한다는 평가가 잘못된 것임을 확인할 수 있게 될 것이다. 그리고 이기적인 개인의 모습이 사회적 선과 어떻게 조화를 이룰 수 있는지에 대해서도 올바로 파악하게 될 것이다. 이로써 우리는 그의 도덕 철학 체계에 담긴 의미와 내용을 올바로 이해할 뿐만 아니라 『국부론』에 나오는 인간관에 대해서도 올바로 이해할 수 있는 단서를 갖게 될 것이다. 논자에게 스미스의 도덕 철학은 그 중요성에 비해 거의 다루어지지 않았던 점이 의외의 사실처럼 보이기도 하지만, 어쩌면 당연한 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 그 이유는 스미스가 우리에게 경제학자이자 『국부론』의 저자로 소개되어 왔기 때문이다. 그렇지만 그가 도덕 철학자에서 경제 문제로 자신의 관심 주제를 확장한 점을 고려할 때 그의 도덕 철학은 그의 경제학을 이루는 근간이 되기도 한다는 사실을 기억해야 할 것이다. 최종적으로 우리는 그의 도덕 철학을 살펴봄으로써 영국의 공리주의의 정신까지 추적하는 지적 성취도 경험할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The idea about well-ordering and harmony has been a common theme in western philosophy as well as in eastern philosophy. This concept, however, was confronted with a crisis by a fall of the Middle Ages and an appearance of modern individualism and liberalism in western society. It's because both individualism and liberalism fundamentally pursue diversity and pluralism, which conflict with an oriental ideal of harmony with a universe. Western philosophy tries to overcome its limitation through deism or natural theology. I’d like to correct a misunderstanding called a problem of Adam Smith by examining Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and go over Smith’s moral philosophy system which has been relatively neglected. We’ll also examine the approved and disapproved as well as the sympathy and impartial spectator concept. Both are all central in Smith’s moral philosophy system and can be compatible with the concept of self-love or self interest individuality. By examining his moral philosophy system, we can make sure that the judgment that self-interested individuality and altruistic individuality are contradictory perspectives that are wrong. It acts like a general prejudice towards his ethics system. Also, we can rightly apprehend how a selfish individual’s image and social virtue can be harmonized. It helps to have a clue for the right understanding content and meaning of his moral philosophy system, as well as his perspective on human beings found in his The Wealth of Nations. Although it is unexpected that Smith’s moral philosophy has been hardly dealt with, despite its importance, it could be considered as a matter of course. That’s because Smith has been introduced as an economist and an author of The Wealth of Nations. However, we should consider that he is a moral philosopher expanding his interest into economic problems and remember the fact that his moral philosophy is the basis of his economics. Lastly, we can experience intellectual achievement about looking into Utilitarianism in England by examining his moral philosophy.
