이 글에서는 스미스가 공감을 중심으로 도덕감을 어떻게 제시하는지 다룰 것이다. 그를 위해 우선, 도덕감을 가능케 하는 공감 개념을 다음과 같이 세 가지 의미로 구분·정의하겠다. (1) 공감은 타인의 운명에 대한 관심이다; (2) 공감은 타인의 감정에 대한 동료의식 즉, 그 자체로 정념이다; (3) 공감은 타인의 감정과 일치시키고 싶은 욕구 또는 그 욕구의 실현이다. 그런데 스미스에 따르면 도덕감, 즉 시인감과 부인감은 행위의 원인뿐만 아니라 결과 관점에서 종합되어 형성되는 감정이다. 그리고 행위를 발생시키는 근원은 정념(감정)이므로, 행위의 원인과 결과 관점이란 그러한 행위를 불러일으키는 정념의 원인과 결과 관점을 말한다. 따라서 행위의 원인 관점에서 형성되는 시인감과 부인감은 각각 타인의 정념과 일치 또는 불일치, 즉 공감의 성립여부에 뒤따르는 감정을 뜻한다. 다시 말해 시인감은 공감으로 인해 타인의 행위를 적정하다고 느끼는 감정이고, 부인감은 공감이 성립되지 않음으로써 타인의 행위를 부적정하다고 느끼는 감정이다. 그리고 행위의 결과 관점에서 시인감은 감사의 감정인데, 그것이 정당한 시인감이 되기 위해서는 간접적 공감뿐만 아니라 직접적 공감이 필요하다. 또 행위의 결과 관점에서 부인감은 분개의 감정인데, 그것이 정당한 부인감이 되기 위해서는 간접적인 공감이 요구되고 동시에 직접적 공감은 성립되지 않아야 한다.
Abstract
In this paper I will show Smith's thought, 'how moral sentiments are formed by the sympathy'. To this end first of all, I try to propose the various meanings of Smith's sympathy as follows. (1) the sympathy is the interest in the fortune of others; (2) the sympathy is the fellow-feeling for the feeling of others, that is to say the sympathetic passion; (3) the sympathy is the desire for the coincidence with emotions of others. Then further I try to show that the sympathy plays the crucial role in shaping moral sentiments, namely sentiments of approbation and disapprobation. Smith defines moral sentiments synthetically in two different relations by the sympathy, viz in relation to the cause of action and in the relation of the end of action. In relation to the cause of action, the sentiment of approbation means the positive passion that is realized by accordance with the feelings of others, the sentiment of disapprobation is the negative passion realized by no-accordance with the feelings of others. In the relation of the end of action, the sentiment of approbation means the emotion of gratitude which consists not only in the indirect sympathy but also in the direct sympathy. And the sentiment of disapprobation is the emotion of resentment which consists not only in the indirect sympathy but also in the not-being of the direct sympathy.
