수기치인의 현대적 재해석 - 조화의 이상을 중심으로 -

‘수기치인’은 유학의 이상적인 인간상을 가리키는 동시에 개인의 성숙과 사회적 공헌을 함께 추구해 나간다는 수양의 방향을 의미한다. 그러나 개인의 윤리적 선과 사회정치적 이상을 하나의 연속선으로 보는 그 저변의 사고방식은 현대 민주주의 사회에서 그대로 수용되기는 어렵다. 이에 본 논문에서는 ‘수기치인’을 현재에 적용할 수 있는 이상으로 재해석하되 ‘조화’라고 하는 유가적 가치를 그 기초로 삼았다. 다시 말해서, 유가적 조화의 이상을 현대적 상황에 맞게 재해석하고 이에 기초하여 수기치인이라고 하는 수양의 지향점이 가질 수 있는 의미를 모색해 본 것이다. 구체적으로, 조화의 개인적ㆍ내적 차원에 주목하되 이를 사회적 차원으로까지 확장하면서 인(仁)에 기초한 조화의 덕으로 성장해 나갈 수 있는 수양의 지도[map]를 구상해 보았다. 이를 위해 조화의 의미는 현대의 다원적 세계에 맞게 재해석되었다. 이는 수양론의 현대적 의의를 발굴하기 위한 시도의 일환이기도 하다.
Abstract
The phrase "self-cultivation and governing people (修己治人)" represents the ideal human model in Confucianism, encapsulating both the pursuit of individual maturity and the simultaneous contribution to society. However, the traditional view that aligns individual ethical life with a straightforward socio-political ideal is incompatible with modern democratic values. Therefore, we seek to reinterpret "self-cultivation and governing people" in a way that makes it applicable to the present day, grounded in the Confucian value of harmony. In this reinterpretation, we aim to shed light on the contemporary relevance of the Confucian moral cultivation process. Specifically, we focus on the internal dimension of harmony, extending it from the individual to the social level, and situating the path of moral cultivation as a bridge between these two spheres. This process can develop into the virtue of harmony, rooted in the Confucian principle of humanity (仁). To achieve this, the concept of harmony has been reinterpreted to align with the needs of today's pluralistic world. This approach seeks to uncover the modern significance of Confucian moral cultivation and its enduring value in contemporary society.
