본 연구의 목적은 그동안 하나의 유형으로 인식되었던 동반자살과 살해 후 자살의 특성 을 비교･분석하여 관련 법제 개선을 위한 기초자료를 마련하는 것이다. 이를 위해 2013 년부터 2020년까지의 자살 사망자 전수조사 자료를 활용하여 두 자살 유형의 발생 추이 와 특징, 자살 사망자의 특성, 지역적 발생 현황 등을 분석하였다. 또한 함께 사망한 사람 및 살해 피해자와 자살 사망자와의 관계에 따라 사망유형을 구분하고, 개별 유형의 차이 역시 함께 검토하였다. 그 결과 동반자살과 살해 후 자살은 발생 추이나 특성 등에서 다른 양상을 보였으며, 특히 동반 사망자 및 피해자와의 관계에 따라서도 자살 수단과 원인, 발견 장소, 발생 지역 등에 차이가 있었다. 이러한 차이는 동반자살과 살해 후 자살 에 대하여 더욱 깊은 이해가 필요하며, 법적･정책적 대응 역시 차별화되어야 함을 알려 준다. 또한 자살이 실패할 경우 자살 시도자에 대한 관리방안이나 살해 피해자에 대한 지원 역시 다르게 접근되어야 한다. 마지막으로 보다 효과적인 자살예방을 위해 더욱 구 체적인 자살 사망 관련 자료의 구축과 근거의 마련이 필요함을 제언하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is not only to compare and analyze the charac- teristics of collective suicide and homicide-suicide, which have been recognized as one type of suicide without separate legal and policy responses, but to reveal the differences between them. To this end, I analyzed the incidence trends and attributes of both types of suicide, the charac- teristics of the suicide victims, and the regional differences by using data from the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention from 2013 to 2020. I also categorized the type of deaths of collective suicide as well as homicide-suicide based on the relationship with the person who died together or the murder victim, and identified the differences between each type. As a result, it is found that collective suicide and homicide-suicide have different patterns and characteristics, especially in terms of the means and cause of suicide, the place where the body found, and the region of occurrence, depending on the person who attempted suicide together or the relationship with the murder victim. These differences suggest that collective suicide and homicide-suicide need to be better understood and that legal and policy responses should be differentiated. I also suggest that management of suicide attempts and support for victims should be approached differently when suicide attempts are unsuccessful. Finally, I recommend that more specific data and evidence on suicide should be developed for more effective suicide prevention.
