Abstract

In the analysis of the artistry of Nabokov's Lolita, the themes of double and of nymphet indeed occupy a large proportion. The term nymphet has an inseparable relationship with the heroine of the novel, while the theme of double implies the homogeneity of the two middle-aged men around Lolita: Humbert and Quilty. Considering the fact that the nymphet is the most important theme for the heroine and the double for the protagonist, a study of the two themes plays a key role in the analysis of Lolita. Lolita is highlighted by the dualistic or contrastive composition, as the strange name Humbert Humbert suggests that there are two Humberts in Lolita: the protagonist-Humbert and the narrator-Humbert. As the name represents the dualistic and divided inner world of the protagonist, the theme of double, combined with the theme of nymphet, is to reveal the true character of the protagonist. Although the protagonist-Humbert is suffering from the disease of nympholepsy by the result of the wound of separation with his first love, he gets to meet true love by meeting the nymphet Lolita. However, his recovered love is broken, as the nymphet is ruined, by the evil pedophile Quilty. For this reason, it is needed for such an evil man to the punishment of death. It should not be forgotten that there is an inner sense of guilt in this idea. Although Lolita makes the narrator-Humbert of the confession a winner, he does not achieve complete success. It is because he is only a puppet, which does not know the invisible hand of the author, who manipulates him. Despite of the fact that he fabricates the story with a nymphet and with a double to camouflage his unethical crime, he was not able to succeed to hide the exposure of guilt. It is because both the creation of nymphet and the use of double are the expression of guilt. The latent sense of guilt requires self-purification and self-justification.
