Education Institutes for Foreigners in South Korea: Legal Issues, and Future Directions

Abstract

Foreigners' schools, foreign educational institutions, and international schools have different purposes of establishment and legal foundations in Korea. Nonetheless, due to lack of understanding the classification about those different types of schools, it causes some confusion in operation, management, and supervision of the educational institutes. Futhermore, it is concerned to bring about some confusion and damage to students and parents. Hence, this paper clearly defines the concepts of the three different types of schools (foreigners' schools, foreign educational institutions, and international schools) and introduces legal foundations regarding those schools to get a deeper and more accurate understanding. It also presents controversial legal issues and suggests future directions to resolve the problems. Certainly, it would be appliable for the practical implementation in the processes of making laws and policies.
