Abstract

Ontologically, pain refers to the sensory and emotional unpleasant experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage (Melzack, 1975). While pain is universally experienced, direct access to another individual’s pain is not possible. The only way to share the experience of pain, which is inherently personal and subjective, is through its expression in language. However, pain is not limited solely to the intensity of a specific sensation but encompasses a wide range of qualities beneath a single lexical level. Pain verbs generally encompass fewer than five core verbs. In English, “pain,” “ache,” and “hurt” are used; in German, “schmerzen” and “weh tun”; and in Russian, the verb “бол еть” is prominent. Beyond these basic pain verbs, there are secondary pain verbs borrowed from other semantic fields. These secondary pain verbs cannot be fully explained through traditional metaphoric or metonymic interpretations. When an active action is applied to the body, pain emerges as a potential outcome in secondary pain verbs. This transformation involves shifts in meaning, accompanied by morphological and syntactic changes, which ultimately reshape the verb into a cognitive concept of pain. This study defines the rebranding process of the base verb and examines the structural characteristics of these secondary pain verbs. It explores their lexical evolution from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. The study argues that secondary pain verbs are not just simple shifts in meaning but rather a rebranding process that fundamentally alters how speakers perceive and interpret these verbs, offering new insights into the mechanisms of linguistic and cognitive change.
