Abstract

As a symbol of identity, the Russian language was perceived as an effective accelerator for consolidating Soviet culture and building interethnic cohesion during the period of Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev, who aimed to build a single super-ethnic, super-race, Soviet nation that would unite diverse peoples. Thus, throughout the Soviet period, the policy of pushing Russian╶ ethnic languages through the bilingual stage to eventual language assimilation was steadily pursued. Thus, ethnic language speakers were expected to become bilingual in order to integrate into the Russian-style Soviet infrastructure, in direct opposition to Lenin’s indigenization policy, which called for Russians to become bilingual by learning the ethnic language of their region of residence. Language policy during the Soviet period and in Russia has been characterized by an ongoing struggle for linguistic purity, which emphasizes both conscious and artificial language purity, and assimilation, which promotes national unity by supporting monolingualism, despite the fact that the system is actually a multilingual society.
