Abstract
Evgeny Zamyatin’s novel We departs from traditional narrative structures by constructing a unique semantic domain through the arrangement of motifs. In this context, the repetition of motifs functions as a key structural principle within Zamyatin’s literary design. Among these recurring motifs, the natural elements - particularly the symbolic representations of fire and water - play a pivotal role in shaping the novel’s semantic architecture. These elements serve as central mediators of the protagonist D-503’s inner transformation and ontological awakening. Fire emerges as a symbol of irrationality, vitality, destruction, and revolution, while water, through its imagery of dissolution and mobility, functions as a disruptive force that destabilizes the rigid order of the One State. Both motifs are closely intertwined with the protagonist’s psychological unrest and his crisis of identity. Ultimately, these elements constitute a deeper symbolic system that fractures the rational and totalitarian order of the state. Through such symbolic constructs, We delves into the latent human desire for freedom and the existential dilemmas embedded within the self. Thus, the symbolic structure in We is not merely a decorative narrative device but a deliberate literary strategy and a form of philosophical resistance articulated by Zamyatin.
