Abstract
This article analyzes the concept of ‘common morality’, a moral theory used by Tom L. Beauchamp and James F. Childress as the theoretical basis for their four principles in Principles of Biomedical Ethics, by comparing it with the earlier work on common morality by Alan Donagan and Bernard Gert. This comparison will help understanding the development of common morality, as well as the implications of Beauchamp and Childress’s common morality in their theory of bioethics. This paper analyzes Donagan’s common morality, Gert’s common morality, and Beauchamp and Childressvs common morality in parallel way, and then present the common aspects of their common morality as well as the specificities of Beauchamp and Childress’s common morality. Beauchamp and Childress’s common morality differs from Donagan’s common morality or Gert’s common morality in that it extends the scope of the agent’s deliberation to include the common morality itself. Thus, it can be seen that Beauchamp and Childress’s common morality requires the agent to have bottom-up and top-down thinking and judgment, which is broader in scope than Donagan and Gert require.
