대북인식의 변화와 연속성: 스테레오타입적 경향을 중심으로

초록

대북인식은 남남갈등이라고 일컬어지는 논의에서 가장 기본적인 전제로 간주된다. 그런데 대북인식을 북한의 행동이나 남한의 정권교체 및 대북정책에 대한 사후적인 반응으로만 여기는 경향이 존재한다. 이 연구는 대북인식의 형성과 이후의 변화양상을 심리학적 접근으로 설명하고, 이것이 남북관계에서 갖는 함의를 도출하고자 했다. 인식주체가 사회집단을 범주화하면서 스테레오타입이 형성될 수 있는데, 전쟁경험이 있는 민족 내부의 분단이라는 요인으로 인해 단일하지 않은 대북인식이 형성되었다. 이러한 대북인식은 인지구조의 작동원리 중 하나인 스테레오타입과 유사함을 보이는데, 경험자료 분석을 통해 대북인식 변화에 스테레오타입적 경향이 나타남을 보였다. 그리고 스테레오타입적 경향이 나타나는 대북인식을 고려하면, 남남갈등에서 나타나는 인식의 차이를 해소의 대상으로만 볼 수 없음을 지적했다. 또한 남북관계 개선에 있어서 대북인식 차이와 스테레오타입적 경향을 장애요소로 간주하기보다는 파생되는 갈등을 조율할 수 있는 사회적 능력이 요구되는 것으로 분석했다.

Abstract

Perception on North Korea plays the role of a basic premise in the so-called South-South Conflict, which indicates conflicts within South Korea over North Korean issues. Whereas perception on North Korea is frequently considered as an ex post response to certain events by North Korea or to changes within South Korean policy toward North Korea, this research explains how South Koreans establish their perception on North Korea and how it changes afterwards. The research approached this question by adopting psychological analysis and tried to derive political implications for inter-Korean relation. Stereotypes can be formed when people categorize social groups surrounding them. For South Koreans, the historical factor, the division within a nation has caused a dual and ambiguous categorization. By analyzing some empirical data, the research has found that the change in the perception on North Korea displays some similarities with the mechanism of stereotypes. Taking the stereotypic tendency of the perception on North Korea into account, attempts to narrow the gap between perceptions would not be effective. Social capability would be required to manage differences in perception to hinder from developing into conflict.
