이 논문의 목표는 묵경이 어떤 문제의식 하에 쓰여졌는가, 그리고 그 문제를 어떻게 해결했는지의 물음들에 답을 주는 것이다. 내가 보기에, 묵경의 작성 동기는 어떤 사람이 보편적으로 사람들을 어떻게 사랑할 수 있는가, 그리고 미덕을 구성하는 데 있어서 결과로서의 실용적 이익의 역할은 무엇인가와 같은 문제들을 해결하려한 것이었다. 즉 유가의 仁과 선의의 윤리학적 입장에 대해 겸애와 실용을 주장했던 전기묵가의 주장들을 옹호하는 것이었다. 묵경의 저자가 택한 방법은 辯인데, 이것은 언어적 기술의 과정을 통하여 어떤 주제에 대한 필요조건 혹은 가정을 찾는 작업으로 볼 수 있다. 그들이 도달한 결론은 보편성은 우리의 의도를 통해서 확보될 수 있고, 미덕은 단순한 결과가 아니라 능력과 결부된 의도로 구성된다는 것이었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to give an answer to the questions of what the Mojing was originally designed for and of how the Mojing solved its problematic. In my view, what originally motivated the writing of the Mojing was to solve the problematic of how an individual man could love others universally and of what is the role of pragmatic utility as a consequence in constituting a real virtue, both of which were related to the core claims of universal love (jian-ai, 兼愛) and practical utility (shi-yong, 實用) suggested by early Moists as opposed to the Confucian emphasis on preferential love and on mere good will. The Neo-Moist method to solve this problematics was a disputation (bian, 辯), which can be characterized as a search for some necessary conditions or presuppositions for certain subject matter through the process of verbal description. What they found at last was that universality could be obtained through our intentions and that virtue consisted not of the mere results, but of intentions together with capacities related.
