Abstract

This dissertation is to see how China adopted "the System of Regional National Autonomy" that was a national policy of China under some sorts of historic environment, and analyze factors that made 'a federal system' and 'national self-determination' abolished in the end. Federal system, national self-determination and national autonomy were main factors of nationalism suggested by the Chinese Communist Party. The national policy of Chinese Communist Party was more stressed than the Federal system and national self-determination before the anti-Japanese war era. Although the System of Regional National Autonomy had been suggested since the early stage of the party formation, it was just a doctrine stuck for practical meanings. Since the late 1930th the policy has shown more specific and practical meanings, and since then nationalism-related organizations and statutes have been established. Even though the policy was officially adopted in 1949, it was actually selected simultaneously with founding of autonomous districts of inner Mongolia in 1947. The federal system was mainly influenced by the recognition and realization of Lenin's National Integration. However, the realistic and historical differences with the Soviet Union that China had faced were the main reasons that made China gave up the federal system. and the main reason why national self-determination was advocated for a long time was that it was suggested as the means to constitute the united front in order to escape from imperialism's oppression.
