Abstract
This paper investigates foreign strategies undertaken by Ukraine to maintain its territorial security and to enhance its national interests. Ukraine is faced with the dilemma of making diplomatic decisions between the East(i.e., Russia) and the West(i.e., the U.S. and EU). Considering Ukraine's geopolitical location and national potential, its foreign policy decisions could bring about a serious change in the balance of power in the Eurasian region. For this reason, Ukraine has become the country on which both the U.S. and Russia concentrate their diplomatic efforts, attempting to attract the country into their spheres of influence. In this situation, Ukraine must devise foreign strategies based on cool-headed realism for both the survival of the state and economic prosperity, while responding to the changing international order. A concrete representation of the foreign strategy would be the 'multivectorism' adopted by former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma. Its main concept is that no policy conflicts exist between Western and Russian vectors since priority and pursuit in Ukrainian foreign policies are not a question of choice, but rather, multivectoral, including all possible elements. Multivectorism indeed plays a bridging role between East and West. Considering the geopolitical conditions that make it difficult for Ukraine to carry out a foreign policy that depends heavily on a particular country, multivectorism cannot help but be the only alternative for Ukraine.
