Abstract
A recent trend tells that party studies in Korea pay an increasing attention to the issue of 'relevance of theory,' a classic but highly contentious subject in Korean social science for a long time. Such surge of the relevance issue comes from, in part, the uneven deepening between party theory and party practices in Korean politics. First, this article provides a critical review of current party studies focusing on the two dominant streams, positivists approach and macro-historical approach. It is urged that positivists should expand their time and spatial horizon in designing research questions. It is also suggested that macro-historical approach should not employ a conception of linear historical development across different cultures and regions. Second, this article gives a short review of relevance of theory debate in American political science since the 1960s. Such a review stresses that 'historic turn' in American political science was accompanied by the changes in social scientific ontology and methodology. Finally, this article suggests that Korean party studies should incorporate historical approach as a crucial strategy to enhance 'relevance of theory'. Specifically, it suggests that party studies need to explore historical origins of party underdevelopment during the 'developmental state era' in the 1960s.
