현대 한국정치학의 정체성 담론: 역사적 고찰

한국 정치학의 정체성 문제는 1960년대부터 최근까지 꾸준하게 제기되어 왔다. 그 출발점은 한국의 정치현실에 의미 있는 대답을 주지 못할 뿐 아니라 제대로 설명하지도 못하는 한국정치학의 무능력에 대한 자각이었다. 이 문제에 대해 1960년대와 1970년대의 주장들은 ‘우리의 문제의식에 입각한 연구’, ‘학문적 용기’를 강조하는 경향을 보였다. 1980년대 정체성 담론은 서구이론의 효용성에 대해 주류학계와 진보학계가 날카롭게 대립하며 이데올로기적 논쟁으로 치달았다. 1990년대는 정체성 확립을 가로 막는 근본적 원인을 탐구하면서 정치학의 방법론, 학계의 구조, 오리엔탈리즘, 의식의 식민화와 같은 문제들을 중심으로 전개되었다. 그리고 2000년대에 들어서면 우리의 독특한 현상을 보편적 연구 대상으로 삼아 개념화ㆍ이론화함으로써 정치학의 내용을 풍부하게 하고, 유사한 문제를 안고 있는 제3세계와 그 성과를 공유하며, 세계학계에 또 하나의 보편으로 제시할 필요성을 강조하게 이른다. 이러한 인식 위에서 현재는 방법론과 시각의 다중심성을 견지하며 그 속에서 탈식민화의 가능성을 모색하려는 작업이 꾸준히 추진되면서, ‘우리 문제’, ‘우리 시각’, ‘우리 안의 보편성’, ‘우리의 방법론’을 부각시키는 개별 연구들이 축적되고 있다.
Abstract
The identity problem of Korean political science has been continuously raised since 1960s. The purpose of this paper is to examine the historical trajectory of the identity discourses on Korean political science produced in the Korean academia over last four decades. The point of departure for the discourses was the self-awakening of Korean political scientists in the late 1960s that Korean political science did fail to explain Korean political reality properly and offer any meaningful solution to it. Thus, the discourses in the 1960s and the 1970s showed the tendency to stress “the research based on our own problematization” and “academic courage.” The mainstream and progressive scholars in the 1980s engaged in the intense debate over the utility of Western theories, which would lead to ideological polemics. The discourses in the 1990s explored fundamental causes which worked as obstacles to the formation of the identity, focusing on such subjects as the methodology of political science, the structure of Korean academia, Orientalism, the colonization of the consciousness and the like. The discourses in the 2000s have stressed that we Koreans have to enrich the subject-matter of political science by conceptualizing and theorizing our distinct phenomena as the universal research object, share research outcomes with scholars in the Third World countries facing problems similar to us, and present them before the world academia as the “another universal.” On the basis of such awareness, individual researches have been progressing and accumulating so far, maintaining polycentrism of methodologies and viewpoints, exploring the potential for decolonization, and thereby bringing “our problems,” “our viewpoints,” “the universality in us,” and “our methodology” into relief.
