선거에서 연령대별 투표선택의 현격한 차이는 연령효과인가, 세대효과인가? 이 질문에 대해 많은 연구가 진지하게 다루어왔지만, 만족할만한 결론을 내리지 못했다. 그 이유는 시간을 경과하며 변화를 관찰해야 하는 생애주기와 시간의 경과에도 유지되어야 하는 세대의 속성을 함께 살피지 못했기 때문이다. 기존 연구는 단일시점 자료에 의존함으로써 그것이 연령효과인지, 세대효과인지 가려낼 수 없는 한계를 보여주었다. 이러한 문제점은 자료상의 한계에서 필연적으로 야기된 바, 본 연구는 1992년 이후 20년간 대통령선거 사후조사 자료를 결합하여 분석함으로써 연령-기간-세대효과를 나누어 보여준다. 세 효과를 통합하는 모형화를 통해 각각의 효과를 분석한 결과, 386세대를 비롯한 이전 세대에 비해 이후 세대는 통계적으로 유의하게 민주당 계열 후보를 더 많이 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 더불어 나이가 들수록 보수화되는 연령효과를 투표선택에서도 발견할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Why do young voters support progressive candidates more than their senior counterparts in recent elections? Is it life-cycle or generational effect? This paper decomposes two distinct mechanism of demographic variables, that is, age(life-cycle) and cohort. Utilizing pooled cross-sectional data covering in 1992~2012 presidential election survey, we have the finding that supports life-cycle and generational hypothesis at the same time. The older the electorates are, the more they likely choose conservative candidates. And compared to elder generations, X-generation and IMF-generation are more prone to support progressive candidates.
