본 연구는 미국 SNS 사용자의 정치참여 유형을 분석하고자 한다. 세부적으로, 첫째, 인터넷 사용자와 비사용자 간의 정치참여 유형별 차이를 살펴볼 것이다. 둘째, 미국 SNS 사용자집단(SUG)과 비사용자집단(SNUG) 간의 정치참여 유형별 차이는 무엇인지 분석한다. 셋째, SUG의 6가지 유형별 관습적․비관습적 정치참여의 결정요인은 무엇인지 살펴본다. 마지막으로, 연구를 통해서 나타난 미국 SUG의 정치참여의 특징을 살펴보고자 한다. 연구는 Pew Internet & American Life Project의 시민참여 설문조사 자료를 이용하여, 계량적 연구방법론을 적용했다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 인터넷 사용자는 비사용자보다 적극적인 정치참여를 보이고 있다. 둘째, 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통해 인터넷 사용자 중 여성일수록, 저연령일수록, 고학력일수록, 고소득일수록, 유색인종일수록 SUG에 포함될 가능성이 크다는 것을 확인했다. 셋째, SUG가 비관습적 항의형 참여에 더 적극적이며, 불만을 가진 시민들의 참여도구로 SNS가 활용될 수 있음을 확인했다. 반대로 관습적 투표자형 참여에는 SNUG가 더욱 적극적임을 도출했다. 넷째, 미국에서 SUG의 6가지 정치참여 유형을 결정하는 중요한 변인은 학력이었다.
Abstract
This study is aimed at analyzing the political participation type of SNS users in the U.S. Specifically, the differences in political participation type between the internet users and non-users will be examined in detail. Second, the differences in political participation type between SNS user group(SUG) and SNS non-user group(SNUG) will be examined. Third, the 6 types of political participation of SUG will be examined. Finally, the political implications of American SUG will be established. As for research method, a quantitative research method using the survey data of Pew Internet & American Life Project was used. The findings are as follows. First, the internet users were more active political participants than non-users. Second, the logistic regression analysis revealed that the following demographics were more likely to be SUG among the internet users: women, younger people, highly-educated people, highly-paid people, and non-white people. Third, SNS was used as a tool for unconventional protester-type participants who wished to complain about the politics. On the other hand, SNUG were more likely to be conventional voter-type participants. Fourth, the major determinant of the 6 types of political participation of SUG in the U.S. was education level.
