촛불시위의 정치학: 미시적 분석, 거시적 주장, 다층적 비교연구

초록

본 논문은 2016 촛불시위에 관한 기존 연구를 비판적으로 검토해 후속 연구 아젠다를 제안하고자 한다. 2016 촛불시위에 관한 기존 연구는 시위 참여자들의 특성을 파악하고자 한 미시적 연구와 촛불집회의 역사적 배경과 구조적 조건을 규명하고자 한 거시적 연구로 구분할 수 있다. 미시적 연구는 설문자료를 이용해 촛불시위에 누가, 왜 참여했는지 실증분석하는 성과를 쌓았다. 거시적 연구는 한국 민주주의 역사에서 2016 촛불시위가 가진 의미와 이를 가능케 한 정치․경제적 조건을 규명했다. 그러나 단일 분석수준에 입각한 연구는 촛불시위가 던진 중요한 질문들에 대해 논리적으로 충분히 설득력 있는 해답을 제공하지 못하거나 실증적으로 뒷받침되지 못하는 주장을 하는 한계를 보였다. 따라서 본 논문은 두 가지 방향의 후속 연구를 제안한다. 하나는 미시적 차원과 거시적 차원을 모두 포괄하는 다층적 연구이다. 또 하나는 2016 촛불시위를 관련된 학문 분야의 이론에 접목해 다른 사례들과 비교연구하는 것이다. 즉, 본 논문은 2016 촛불시위가 던진 다층적 비교연구 주제들을 규명해 후속 연구 활성화를 도모하기 위한 제언이다.

Abstract

Based on a critical review on the extant works on the 2016 candlelight protest in South Korea, this paper suggests follow-up research agendas. The existing literature is largely classified as micro analyses on protest participants and macro studies examining the historical and structural background of the candlelight protest. Using survey data, the micro-level studies have conducted empirical analyses of who participated in the candlelight protest and why. The macro-level studies have identified the historical meanings and the political economic conditions of the protest. However, the micro-level and the macro-level studies are either logically flawed or empirically not supported. This paper thus suggests multi-level comparative studies that are embedded in related theories and lead to important further research on the candlelight protest of South Korea.
