이 연구는 일-가족 양립제도가 형성되지 않았던 1960년대 이래 90년대 초반까지 기혼 취업여성들의 일-가족 양립전략과 서사구조를 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 위 약 30년의 산업화 기간동안 “대표적인” 여성직종에 종사하고, 해당시기에 자녀양육기를 거친 열 두명의 생애사례를 분석했다. 연구결과 다양한 양립전략이 수행되었음을 발견하였는데, 거기에는 생애주기적 노동공급의 조절이나 피임과 단산ㆍ낙태 등 출산조절과 같은 개인적 노력, 딸이나 할머니 등 여성가족원 및 친족원의 지원, 그리고 저임금의 ‘식모’와 같은 여성가구원의 사용 등이 포함된다. 한편 서사적 특성과 관련하여 이들의 구술은 대체로 매우 강력한 노동정체성을 보이지만, 일부의 사례에서는 노동정체성과 가족정체성이 경합하는 모습을 보이기도 한다. 결론적으로 60년대 이래 30년간의 산업화 과정에서 일과 가족의 양립, 자녀양육의 과제는 여성의 개인적 노력을 중심으로, 여성가족(친족)원의 지원이 결합하여 진행된 다양한 양립전략을 통해서 수행되었다고 보인다. 그리고 이 과정에서 가부장제란 적어도 사적 영역에서는 저항의 대상이기보다는 타협과 순응의 대상으로 존재하였다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This is to research how married women with young children managed to cope the work and family conflicts during the period from early 1960's to early 1990's when the family friendly policies were almostly not provided. Moreover this rearch analyzes how they tell their strories focussing the work(family) identity. The research data is the life histories of 12 women selected from the data of the project which I co-worked for as a researcher "The Paradigmatic Shift of Work-Family Relationship and Women's Work Experiences after Industrialization in Korea" that was done during the year of 2005 to 2007 sponsored by Korean Research Foundation. The cases worked for the typical jobs at the period like farmer, factory worker, clerical worker, and the professional worker. The results are as followings: They strived to manage the work and life reconcilation with the personal efforts like moving between the work in home and outside following the life cycle, controling the reproduction such as contraception, controling the birth interval, stopping childbearing, and abortion, getting the helps from the other women family members such as those of daughters and mother-in-laws or mothers of birth families, hiring the low-paid maids, and lastly mobilizing the community networks. Meanwhile the narratives show the diverse identities on work. Some has the strong work-oriented stories in which the job success and their contribution to the family wealth and the recognition from the family-in-laws were emphasized. Others showed the weak work identities where the hardship of the work lives were stressed or the filial piety from their children was accentuated as a compensation for their hard works. Among all the cases of jobs the call for the husbands' participation at the family work and care of the children were almostly not found in their narratives. The patriarchy seemed too strong for women to fight at the times of 1960s to 1980s of this study. In conclusion, women's personal efforts were the main hidden prop for the work and family reconciliation in the last 30 years of industrialization in Korea. Moreover they couldn't resist directly the patriarchal system in the family which burdened all the pain on them, but bargained with it.
