Abstract
The usage of the term “truth” in Indian history of ideas frequently throws the general reader into confusion. An attempt is made, at first, to sort out major concepts in Sanskrit corresponding to “truth” in English. They are analyzed and contextualized to select some of them out deserving serious academic discussions in the context of research in history of Indian philosophy. One of them, “tattva” is analyzed in its morphological (yaugika) and pragmatic (rūḍha) aspects based mainly on the texts belonging to early Nyāya tradition. The major argument is that we can differentiate two usage of the term “tattva” in the sense of “truth”, one in adverbial usage in the sense of “such-ness”, and the other in pronominal usage in the sense of “that-ness”. Considering and modifying preceding researches, the opinion is stated that these two usages of the term “tattva” have their own cultural context and are ready integrated parallel into the text, the Nyāyasūtra and explained in the Nyāyabhāṣya accordingly. The adverbial usage alludes to an epistemological stance of correspondence theory and seems to have built up the semantic basis for the widespread adoption of this term for “truth” in the diverse philosophical traditions on the basis of its rather neutral connotation. In case of pronominal usage of the term “tattva”, the referential connotation is in the kernel of the complex of the meanings and some sort of ontological commitment is alluded to. This usage stands out especially in the context of the debates on ontological status of outer 229 objective world between Nyāya and Buddhist traditions. The reason why the term has got such a strong connotation of ontological commitment is guessed to be found in the Upaniṣadic traditions in which the universal principle, brahman (n.) was referred to by the word “tat”. This procedure could be also traced in the Buddhist records attributed to Nāgārjuna in distinct way, as demonstrated by Ch. Lindter, though some parts of his evaluation, at the end, is hard to be agreed by the author. Dividing and clarifying different layers of meaning attributed to “tattva” could be of some use for further research in the history of Indian philosophy, and will allow to step next to analyze some other concepts meaning “truth” in Indian traditions, for example “satya” in the sense that it should be placed in fully different context, distant from the correspondence theory in epistemology, of Indian history of ideas.
