Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the type of apologetic message on the forgiveness intentions. Apologetic message were composed of 'express shame and guilt', 'offer of restitution', and 'corrective action', and the number of apology components(one vs. two vs. three). Specifically, this research explored that these messages influenced the forgiveness intentions in violations of promise between friends. Results indicate that apologies with more components elicited more forgiveness intentions than those with fewer components, and certain components were more important than others. Specifically, 'Express shame and guilt' was viewed as most important in requesting forgiveness. Based on the empirical results of this study, the implications and future directions for research in this field were discussed.
