Abstract

Name is one of important factors of her/his social identity. It is also a representative form of practice that reproduces conscious connections to cultural backgrounds or groups. For this reason, names of certain cultural styles are subject to discrimination and exclusion. Sometimes, multiple names can be used according to relationships or situations. In the case of immigrants, the specificity of going through various cultures is added, and even for an individual, the use of names in various cultural style is not rare. So then, the use new names of migrants can be viewed as a process of transnationalism called selective use of multiple names, not a process of assimilation such as rename, name change or giving up name. Therefore, this study analyzes the determinants by presenting variables of civic engagement and discrimination as the main factors of immigrants’ use of the new name in the country of residence. In addition, the relationship between civic engagement and discrimination is identified to verify the mediation effect and to calculate the indirect effect to find out the degree of mediation. It is also tested whether civic engagement moderates the effect between discrimination and the use of the new name in the country of residence. As a result of the analysis, this study finds that civic engagement and discrimination increases the possibility of the use of the new name in the country of residence and that civic engagement increases the risk of discrimination. Furthermore, the partial mediating effect is verified by showing significant indirect effects through the discrimination experience of civic engagement. However, civic engagement does not have the moderating effect on the effect between discrimination and the use of the new name in the country of residence.
