Abstract

The doctrine that the human soul is immaterial and immortal was taken for granted by everybody in the Middle Ages. However, the question of whether or not the immortality of the soul could be philosophically proven was controversial. While emphasizing the importance that the doctrine of the immortality of the soul came to assume during the Renaissance, Paul Oskar Kristeller attempts to argue that when Aristotle became the chief philosophical authority in the thirteenth century the doctrine did not play a major role in medieval thought. This paper aims to show that Kristeller’s perspective on the Middle Ages is not justified. To do so, we will argue that not a few thirteenth century thinkers defended the immortality of the soul with philosophical arguments. Furthermore, we wish to maintain by appealing to the historical events namely, the Council of Vienne held in the Middle Ages and the Fifth Council of the Lateran held in the Renaissance period that Kristeller’s account of discontinuity between the two eras is not well founded.
