한국사회의 마이너리티 생산과 차별태도

Change of discriminatory territories and attitudes in Korea

초록

오늘날 유연화, 지구화와 같은 사회구조적 변동으로 인한 유동성의 증가는 상시적불안을 가중시키는 동시에 변화하는 상황에 대한 모든 책임을 개인에게 전가하는신자유주의적 가치의 확산은 개인의 취약성을 증가시키고 있다. 이같은 변화는 다수 대중들의 사회적 존재가치와 정체성에 대한 위기감을 고조시키며, 긍정적인 정체성을 보존하기 위해 대중들은 마이너리티에 대한 상징적 경계를 형성하고 차별을 확대할 가능성을 가진다. 이에 본 연구는 성, 외모, 신체, 생활양식, 취향 등 다양한 영역에서 생산되는 마이너리티에 대한 차별의 요인들을 유형화하고, 사회적 불안과 신자유주의적 가치관의 확산이 마이너리티 차별태도에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 본 분석을 위해 16세에서 65세 사이의 전국 표본을 대상으로 인터넷설문조사를 실시하였으며, 그 중 2,034명의 응답자를 분석 대상으로 하였다. 분석결과를 요약하자면 첫째, 한국사회에서 마이너리티는 5개의 유형으로 구별되었으며, 구체적으로 전통적인 차별 영역이었던 결핍 및 열등차별과 새로운 차별 영역으로 취향, 중독, 결혼차별이 확인되었다. 둘째, 생활불안과 구조불안은 마이너리티차별태도에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타난 반면, 신자유주의 가치관의 확산에 따른 삶의 통제감 상실은 차별태도를 강화하는 것으로 나타났다. 좀 더구체적으로 차별의 유형별로 영향 요인을 살펴보면, 신자유주의 가치관인 경쟁의내면화는 전통적인 차별 집단(결핍과 열등)에는 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하지만, 새로운 차별 영역인 취향과 중독 집단에 대한 차별태도에는 정적인 영향을 미치고있었다. 셋째, 사회적 신뢰가 마이너리티에 대한 차별태도를 완화시키는 역할을 하고 있는가를 살펴본 결과, 대인신뢰와 제도신뢰는 결핍과 열등 집단에 대한 차별태도를 감소시키는데 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있지만, 취향, 중독, 결혼 집단에 대한차별태도를 감소시키는데 아무런 영향을 미치지 못했다. 이같은 결과는 한국사회에서 마이너리티에 대한 차별은 사회적 불안보다는 신자유주의 가치가 강제됨에 따라 나타나는 삶의 통제감 상실과 경쟁의 내면화가 중요한 요인이며, 새로운 차별의영역에 대해서는 대인 및 제도 신뢰가 아무런 역할을 하지 못함으로써 사회적 균열은 확산될 것으로 예상된다.

Abstract

Social conflict in Korea has been expanded from the matter of redistribution to the recognition of lifestyles and identities. Especially, targets of discrimination as social exclusion have been expanded in the wave of social/economic changes. For this reason, this study begins by considering the types of discrimination. And, it goes on to examine how insecurity, conflicts, and the spread of neoliberal values influence on the discriminatory attitudes towards minority groups. Based on data from 2,034 respondents aged 16 years and over, this study identifies five types of discriminated groups. More concretely, five types of discriminated groups are classified into two territories such as the traditionally discriminated territories that can be discriminated by deficiency and inferiority and the newly discriminated territories, which are based on taste, addiction, and marriage. The results can be summarized as follows. First, trust in people and social institutions does decrease discriminatory attitudes, but does not have any significant impact on the newly discriminated territories. Second, among neoliberal values, the sense of life control directly influences on the discriminatory attitudes, but the internalization of competition increases discriminatory attitudes in the newly discriminated territories of tastes and addicted groups. Finally, age and SES status have a positive effect, but the level of education has a negative effect on the discriminatory attitudes. The results of this study suggest that the spread of social insecurity and the neoliberal values in Korea reinforce the symbolic territories against minority groups. This result also implies that the reinforcement of symbolic territories can be set in as a social territory and eventually as a structural shutdown.
