Abstract

With the global expansion of the internet, the number of SNS users is rapidly increasing. In most countries, social, political, and economic issues are rapidly disseminated and shared through SNS, resulting in higher user interest in these issues. Importantly, SNS has enabled ordinary citizens to participate in large-scale peaceful protests. By observing the relationship between SNS usage and peaceful protest participation in various countries, this study hypothesized that increased SNS usage would lead to more frequent participation in peaceful protests. Utilizing data from the 7th wave (2017-2022) of the World Value Survey conducted in 49 countries, the relationship between SNS usage and peaceful protests was analyzed, using a multilevel mixed-effects ordered logistic model. The results indicate that statistically significant relationship exists between SNS usage and peaceful protests, revealing that SNS usage promotes peaceful protest participation
