논문은 카스파 볼프(Caspar Friedrich Wolff)의 후성설을 다룬다. 우리는 특히 그의 ‘본질력(vis essentialis)’ 개념을 중심으로 그의 후성설의 특성을 추적할 것이다. 이 연구를 통해 우리는 다음의 세 가지 측면을 밝힌다. (1) 그의 본질력은 <광학>의 영향 아래에 있는 뉴턴주의적 힘이다. (2) 그에게 생명의 발생은 지질학적 과정과 같은 시간 속에서의 형성 과정이었다. 그것은 유기체를 신에 의해 완성된 기계로 파악한 볼프의 이론과 완전히 다르다. (3) 그러나 카스파 볼프에게서 유기체의 형성은 비합목적적 과정이기에, 그의 생명철학은 생명을 합목적적인 자기 형성으로 본 칸트와 같은 철학자와도 다르다,
Abstract
This paper deals with the epigenetic theory of Caspar Friedrich Wolff. Especially focusing on his concept of ‘vis essentialis’, we will get the following conclusions: (1) Vis essentialis can be interpreted as a sort of Newtonian force, formed under the influence of Newton’s Opticks. (2) For Caspar F. Wolff, the epigenesis of an organism was a process of formation in time, such as a geological process. It is completely different from Christian Wolff's concept of organism as a perfect machine already preformed by God. (3) The formation of organisms, for Caspar F. Wolff, is just a dynamic effect without purposiveness, his philosophy of life also differs from that of philosophers like Kant, who regarded life as a purposive self-formation.
