시공간이 감성의 형식이며 사물 자체의 속성이 아니라는 칸트의 주장에 대한 대표적 반론은 19세기에 트렌델렌부르크(F. A. Trendelenburg)에 의해 제기되었다. 트렌델렌부르크에 따르면 칸트는 시공간이 감성의 주관적 형식이거나 사물 자체의 형식일 수 있다고만 보고, 둘 다일 수 있는 가능성은 고려하지 않았다. 본 논문은 칸트의 초월론적 관념론이 트렌델렌부르크의 반론에 얼마나 효과적으로 맞설 수 있는지 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 Ⅱ장에서는 트렌델렌부르크의 『논리적 탐구(Logische Untersuchungen)』(1840)와 「시공간의 배타적 주관성에 관한 칸트의 논증에 있는 간극에 관하여(Über die Lücke in Kants Beweis von der ausschließenden Subjektivität des Raums und der Zeit)」(1867)를 검토하여 트렌델렌부르크의 반론을 정식화하고 이 반론의 유효성을 보인다. Ⅲ장에서는 칸트의 초월론적 관념론의 핵심적 특징 때문에 트렌델렌부르크의 대안이 고려되지 않았으며, 칸트에서 트렌델렌부르크의 반론에 효과적으로 대응할 자원들이 있음을 보인다.
Abstract
The classic objection to Kant's claim that space and time are forms of sensibility and not properties of things in themselves was raised by F. A. Trendelenburg in the 19th century. According to Trendelenburg, Kant only sees space-time as either a subjective form of sensibility or a form of things themselves, without considering the possibility that it could be both. The purpose of this paper is to examine how effectively Kant's transcendental idealism can counter Trendelenburg's objection. In order to do so, Chapter II will examine Trendelenburg's Logische Untersuchungen(1840) and “Über die Lücke in Kants Beweis von der ausschließenden Subjektivität des Raums und der Zeit”(1867) to formalize Trendelenburg's objection and show the validity of this objection. Chapter III shows that Trendelenburg's ‘neglected alternative’ is not considered because of the core characteristics of Kant's transcendental idealism and that Kant has the resources to respond effectively to Trendelenburg's objection.
