Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigatethe psychological characteristics of the Sasang constitutionsby using Braverman nature assessment (BNA). Methods: One hundred seventy-four students participatedin this study, and among them, the 142 individualswho had clearly identified Sasang constitutionaltypes were used for the analysis. Sasang constitutionsand the Braverman temperaments of the subjects weredetermined by using a questionnaire for the Sasangconstitution classification (QSCC) II and BNA, respectively. Body mass index (BMI) was used to compare theinclinations of the Sasang constitutions and Bravermantemperament types. Results: Significant differences in Braverman temperamenttype existed among the Sasang constitutions (P= 0.042), and the relations between Soyangin and thedopamine type and between Taeeumin and the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type were meaningful. Significant differences were also shown in the comparisonwith the Yin and the Yang constitutions (P = 0.017), and the post-hoc analysis showed a strong andsignificant relation between the Yang constitution andthe dopamine type and between the Yin constitutionand the GABA type. The one–way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and the independent t-test were conductedto examine the BMI and the degree of obesity amongthe Sasang constitutions and the Braverman temperamenttypes. Concerning the BMI, Taeeumin showed abigger BMI than the other constitutions (P < 0.001), butno significant differences in the BMI were observedbetween the Braverman temperament types. Conclusion: Soyangin has a close relationship to thedopamine type and Taeeumin has a close relationshipto the GABA type. The correlation between two typeswere more clear when the Yin and the Yang types werecompared to Braverman temperaments. These resultsmay serve as a basis for identifying the psychologicaltraits of Sasang constitutional types, especially in regardto the characteristics related to the four Bravermantemperament types.
