Abstract
Connection between Literature and Film: Jan Svankmajer's 〈Neco Z Alenky: Alice〉 Teachers of literature often use movies in the class for a better understanding of a literary work. But that the movie could destroy the aesthetic reading experience makes the validity of the use of movies in a literary class get doubtful. This is why the Svankmajer's movie is important concerning this problem. Jan Svankmajer's 〈Neco Z Alenky: Alice〉 could be a model case in the study of the relationship between literature and movie in that it, unlike any others, represents the uncanny element in Carroll's text. Carroll's Alice in Wonderland has been considered only as a fairy tale and most of artists represented it as such, focusing on the fantastic element. But many readers testify the grotesque and uncanny feelings in it which Svankmajer considered as the most important in Carroll's art. The grotesque images in the movie imply the importance of images and feelings in converting literary text into a movie. Unlike the other movies which simply represent the plot of the text, it interprets the text through images. And contrasting the living with the dead, human with the things, the present with the past, it reveals the uncanny element hidden in the grotesque images. This means that the validity of converting literary text into a movie lies in its effectiveness in representing thematic images as Svankmajer did in his movie as an answer to the problem rather than realistic representation of the text.
