초록

This article examines the ways in which geographical, cultural, and racial differences function as crucial features of social stratification, by focusing on Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s work on cultural distinctions, the article focuses on the psychological landscape of an African American who struggles for social recognition, especially from the whites. Amiri Baraka severely criticized this play for its neglect of the authentic blackness of African Americans in the South, thus defining it as a play for advocating white supremacy. Yet it pays more attention to making visible the mechanism of distinction practiced in the black community rather than emphasizing the necessity of change between blacks and whites. This article goes on to examine the manner in which class is defined in the conjunction of race, status, and cultural classifications in a racially separated military base. Especially, any kind of life-style precedes race in determining class in terms of cultural practices such as speech, blues singing, or bodily dispositions.
