Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the process in which African-Americans establish their own identity based on a firm sense of community in August Wilson’s Jitney. This study analyzes the way in which African-Americans whose job is driving jitneys struggle to maintain their community and identity. In a crisis of an urban renewal, the jitney drivers strengthen their identity through their sense of community. This is the kind of attitude that African-Americans should pursue in their lives. Through this play, Wilson emphasized that the African-Americans should maintain their own cultural heritage in the American society. Based on this study, it is expected that we can reach a meaningful conclusion on how Wilson’s expectations are portrayed in the follow-up study of Wilson’s other plays.
