초록

The primary concern of this paper is to elucidate the gender-related issues while the masculine poetic identity of William Wordsworth is built. His works such as Tintern Abbey and The Prelude demonstrate that there are intimate relations between the oppressive logic of gender and bourgeois patriarchy during the Romantic period. The task of tracing these relations should be accomplished with the purpose of explaining the social and cultural energies motivating Wordsworth's literary aspirations. His poetry, however, should not be regarded as only dangerous or manipulative due to his masculinist construction of sexuality. This study proves that he elaborates on a vision of moral possibility and human integrity that are based upon specific relations of gender. His whole context of the relations of gender provides the specific interests of masculine identity. Such matters as masculinity, sexual implications and emerging authoritative bourgeois energies bear on his versification and construction of his poetic identity. His description of these issues directly indicates his own sense of the social dimension of his actions. This study suggests at least one of the ways through which his social, cultural and literary life is ideologically specified. Most of all, in an age of uncertain poetic identity, his effort to negotiate these matters mentioned above makes his poetic strategies abundant.
