초록
Multiculturalism, multicultural education, and multicultural literature are all closely related one another in the sense that multicultural education is an effort to put multiculturalism into practice and multicultural literature is an important tool for multicultural education. If a multicultural literary work perpetuates stereotypes and expresses racial prejudices, it can distort historical reality and also cause pain and embarrassment to individual members of the group to whom racial stereotyping is unjustly applied. Since we do not want provide children with erroneous or distorted stereotypes, it is crucial to discuss and eliminate perpetuated stereotypes when we teach multicultural literature in the classroom. As a multicultural writer, Laurence Yep sets one of his goals “to counter various stereotypes” in his Dragonwings, and shows the child’s eyes help the readers overcome and subvert stereotypical thoughts. When the novel, Dragonwings is adapted into a play, Yep chooses the form of memory play that focalizes the child’s point of view. Through the child’s eyes overcoming stereotypes is revealed on both parts of American “white demon” and Chinese Americans.
