Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the current situation of Chinese residents in Incheon as well as the historical backgrou d in order to understand both their social characteristics and group identity. As Incheon was historically the first region where Chinese residents setled at the end of 19th C e n t u r y - t h a t i s , a t t h e begining of Modernization period, and also recently establishe d the first offical China-town at downtown area, it is so crucial to examine the social situation of Chinese residents for establishing the Northeast Asian Comunity in 21th century. However, there have ben very few academic researches, most of which were focused only on racial discrimination isues. Therefore, this study tries to provide t he comprehensive and systematic explanations on the situation of Chinese residents in their historical and social contexts by using both literature reviews and intensive interview method. Main contents of this study include the overview of historical background, present conditions at the institutional level, major demographic figures and their concrete and subjective recognitions in terms of cultural identity and community solidarity. The results of this study indicate that the more inclusive policies for supporting Chinese residents as an equal member of Incheon community should be required.
