Abstract
Archaeological open-air museums are spaces dedicated to the preservation and communal use of prehistoric sites, and play a significant role in public archaeology. In Europe and the UK, archaeological open-air museums are a thriving phenomenon that serves as a long-term venue for a wide range of activities including restoration, exhibition, research and education. This paper introduces the case of Butser Ancient Farm in the UK as a practically operating and viable example that typifies a complex cultural space. Since the 1970s, the farm has acted as the hub of continuous research accomplishments in the restoration of prehistoric and ancient material culture, traditional technology and experimental archaeology of various kinds, in which buildings, monuments and ancient landscapes have been reconstructed in their authentic form. Such activities have contributed to increase the farm's capacity as a locus for archaeological and historical education for both scholars and the general public in hands-on programs with a contemporary twist. Secondly, this paper addresses EXARC, a pan-European association and advisory body of heritage parks and related research organizations. This association operates an interactive website as a platform to establish an organic network of relevant institutions. In addition, the association holds its own conferences and publishes its own journal. It also archives accumulated achievements and make them accessible to the public and researchers. It is well expected that the aforementioned British and European examples will serve as a point of reference for the future preservation, restoration, and utilization of South Korean archaeological parks, and encompasses a comprehensive spectrum of potential applications and functions.
