초록

The purpose of this paper is to make connections between Korean haan and African American blues by reading the two African American postmodern texts, Toni Morrison's Beloved and Gayl Jones's Corregidora. I explore the positive aspects and negative aspects appearing in both haan and blues, and I also investigate the ways in which Morrison and Jones emphasize the brighter side of haan and blues in order to reconcile between the black and the white and the black men and the black women. Among contemporary African American novels, Beloved and Corregidora show some commonalities in that both texts deal with the trauma of slavery and recovery of black identity, and the recuperation of the black community. These novels also share similar literary techniques such as flashback, multiple narrators, and open ending, which are the representative features of postmodern texts. I also argue that the two texts not only have blues relationship but they also demonstrate a call and response pattern. While Jones calls the necessity of resolving the haan of slavery victims in South America, Morrison responds to Jones's call by suggesting the trauma of slavery in North America. In conclusion, I argue that these postmodern black novels effectively deal with blues and haan of black people and resolve their troubles than other realistic or modernist black texts.
