Abstract
In Beloved(1987), Toni Morrison’s particular term, “rememory,” describes African Americans’ intense pain when they remember the past. However, rememory is necessary for African Americans in order to explain their personal stories to each other by revealing their interior strife. Therefore, Morrison in her writings examines possible ways rememory can be used for African Americans to face the pain of the past. This paper explores the possibility of rebuilding the black community through rememories proceeded within Call-and-Response, an African oral tradition. As rememory gives unbearable pain to African Americans, they need a communal and collective voice for reconstructing the truth of the past. This paper argues that Morrison derives the possible way for rememory from African American’s oral tradition. Call-and-Response can move African Americans to reconcile with each other through rememory. Finally, it works as a way to restore the fragmented relationship of African Americans and to rebuild their community in a positive sense.
