Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to illuminate the Conservative Revolution inWeimar, a conservative movement and political discourse led by the right-wingintellectuals during the German Weimar period, from the perspective of anti-Westernismand to restructure its unique and distinct characteristics. As shown by studies on Orientalism, it is true that the West has been understoodas an unbreakable unilateral ruling system throughout the past discourseresearches on Eurocentrism. The conventional image of the West is formulated bythe dualistic view of the world as two antagonistic rivals: the West versus theEast or non-Western. The German Conservative Revolution, however, representsan unique form of Anti-Westernism within the West. This is an interesting indicatorthat the Eurocentric intellectual discourse system was not a wholesome singlestructuresystem but an unstable one with an internal cleavage. As previousstudies on anti-Westernism, represented by Occidentalism, have been based on asame dualistic distinction of the East/non-Western versus the West, it may berendered true that there have hardly, if not never, been studies on anti-Westernismexistent. In this regard, the present study on Conservative Revolution as ananti-Westernism movement is a significant case study that complements the limitationsof the existing researches on Orientalism or Occidentalism. The political discoursesheld in the anti-Westernism of conservative revolutioners present a good model toascertain causes and problems of extreme anti-Westernist phenomena that mayarise in the contemporary society.
