2014년 창립 20주년을 맞는 한국유럽학회가 상징적으로 보여주듯이 한국에서 유럽학은이제 성장기를 거쳐 성숙기로 접어드는 시기에 도달했다. 이 글은 첫째, 한국의 유럽학이지역연구라는 커다란 틀 속의 한 분야로 가지는 특징을 살펴본다. 한국의 유럽연구는 신생국 국가 전략의 틀 속에서 경제 부문이 중요한 위상을 갖고, 사회과학과 인문학이라는두 기둥을 중심으로 만들어졌다. 또한 한국의 발전과 함께 유럽 사회 모델에 대한 관심을반영하여 발전하였다. 둘째, 한국의 유럽연구는 학회와 학술지의 확장 및 학과와 연구소의설립 등으로 표현되는 제도화에서 빠르게 발전했고, 유럽통합의 성공적 진행으로 실용적관심도 크게 늘어나는 등 다양성과 깊이에서 모두 성공적으로 정착했다. 셋째, 따라서 이러한 성공이 지속적으로 유지되고 심화되기 위해서는 보다 견고한 기반 형성을 통한 정체성의 확립과 학술적 자율성을 확인할 수 있는 공동 작업의 강화, 동원되는 학문 및 학자간 장벽을 허물기 위한 꾸준한 노력 등이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.
Abstract
The 20th anniversary of the Korean Society of Contemporary European Studies symbolizes the passage from the growth phase to that of maturation for European studies in Korea. Firstly, this article aims at identifying the characteristics of European studies in Korea as a part of broader area studies. In Korea, the European studies have been founded upon both social sciences and humanities with a particular emphasis on economic dimension, because, for a new developing country, the priority has been economic development. Recently, the European political and social model has emerged as a new center of interests for Korean society. Secondly, the European studies in Korea has been successfully established and institutionalized. Associations, study groups and journals have flourished, as well as new University departments and research centers. This trend has been reinforced by the successful path of European integration symbolized by the single market and the euro. Thirdly, for this brilliant and rapid institutionalization to continue, new emphasis should be given to better design a forum for autonomous scientific deepening, common academic endeavors, and interdisciplinary exchanges among scholars of different disciplines.
