Abstract

The French electoral coalition politics was affected from the absolute majority election system and the Two-Big-Parties-centered multi-party system and, conversely, had influence on the change of party system. In presidential elections the electoral coalitions were built only in the left camp and in 1965, 1974, 2012 due to the indivisibility of presidency and the relative predominance of Gaullist parties. On the contrary, in general elections they were built all the time and not only in the left but also in the right camp since 1962. Both the right and the left coalitions have experience of over-coalition (coalition of coalitions) and were more often built in the second round of voting. The right wing parties have shaped alliance with the centre parties in the 1960/70s and always excluded the formal or organizational alliance with the extreme right wing. Contrary to them, the left wing parties did not create a coalition with centre parties until the late 1990s but made alliance with extreme left wing from the beginning. However, since 2007 the Socialists and their moderate left parties excluded the extreme left including the Communists and shaped a small coalition with the newly emerged Greens. The French political parties have played “nested games”, competing each other both in and outside coalition built in their own ideological camp.
