The purpose of this study focused how to show physiological responses comparingexercise group and non exercise group for progressive maxima1 wheelchair ergometer exercise 10 ading in comp1ete paraplegia. It also examined the various factors which would be influenced physiologica1 responses. Sixteen subjects have been investigated inthis study, and the subjects are divided into two groups as follows: 1) exercise group(7 subjects) 2) non exercise group (9 subjects). Each test was terminated by physical exhaustion and/or an inabi1ity to maintain a flywheel velocity. The results were as follows:1) No difference was noted in pulmonary function test between two groups. 2) ÿ Emax value during maximal exercise was significantly different between thegroups (p<O.05). The mean ÿ Emax of exercise group was 69.67 Q /min, nonexercise group was 41.47 Q /min. 3) ÿ Ü2max( Q /min) value during maxima1 exercise was significantly different betweenthe groups (p<O.05). The mean Ý 0 2ffiax( Q /min) of exercise group was 1.72 Q /rnin, non exercise group was 1.15 Q /min. 4) ÿ O2 max(m1!kg/min) va1ue during maxima1 exercise was significant1y differentbetween the groups (p<O.05). The mean ÿ 02ffiax(ml!l땅 . min) of exercise groupwas 25.99 ml/l땅 . min, non exercise group was 18.61 e /rnin. 5) Maxima1 heart rate(HRmax) value during maxima1 exercise was significantlydifferent between the groups (p<0.05). The mean HRmax of exercise group was180.43 beats/min, non exercise group was 175.00 beats/min. 6) v E/ V 02 value during maximal exercise was not significantly different between the groups (p>0.05). The mean v E/ v O2 of exercise group was 36.36 e / Q O2 , nonexercise group was 45.46 Q / Q O2. Considering the results which explore the exercise group with paraplegia has shown the maximal aerobic power compared with non exercise group, regular and consistentphysical training is highly assumed as a main factor to improve cardiopulmonaryfitness.
