Abstract
Environmental financial reporting refers to the activities associated with the presentation of financial and nonfinancial environmental information in financial statements and SEC rules. Appendix contains a list of authoritative pronouncements(accounting standards and SEC rules and interpretations) that are applicable or relevant to environmental financial reporting. For purpose of environmental financial reporting, environmental laws can be divided into two principal categories: (1) laws governing the ongoing or future release of pollutants to the environment (pollution control laws), and (2) laws governing the cleanup of historical pollution conditions (pollution remediation laws). The federal Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, the operational components of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) are examples of pollution control laws. The federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund) and the remedial components of RCRA, along with their state counterparts, are the primary pollution remediation laws. Environmental financial information can be classified into five broad categories: (1) environmental costs, (2) environmental assets, (3) environmental liabilities, (4) environmental impairments, (5) environmental risks and opportunities. In practice, it is often difficult to differentiate between these categories for financial reporting purposes.
