Abstract
Environmental financial reporting refers to the activities associated with the presentation of financial and nonfinancial environmental information in financial statements and SEC rules. For purpose of environmental financial reporting, environmental financial reporting comprises financial accounting and SEC disclosure. Environmental financial accounting consists of the activities required to present environmental financial information in the entity's financial statements and notes in accordance with GAAP. Audited financial statements of public and nonpublic companies alike are reviewed by independent public accounting firms for conformance with GAAP. Environmental financial information can be classified into five broad categories: (1) environmental costs, (2) environmental assets, (3) environmental liabilities, (4) environmental risks and opportunities. In practice, it is often difficult to differentiate between these categories for financial reporting purposes. Environmental disclosure consists of activities required to present, in accordance with U.S. securities laws and applicable SEC rules, narrative and quantitative environmental information in the nonfinancial statement portions of the issuer's SEC filings. SEC Regulation S-K describes the narrative and quantitative information to be included in the nonfinancial statement portions of SEC disclosure documents, including SEC registration statements and periodic reports. The four narrative provisions of greatest relevance to environmental financial reporting are Item 101(Description of Business), Item 103(Legal Proceedings), Item 303(Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations, or MD&A), and Item 503(c(Risk Factors Disclosed in a Registration Statement).
