특허권의 성과지표에 따른 연구개발비의 가치관련성

초록

지식경제사회에서 무형자산에 대한 기업의 투자가 확대되고 무형자산이 시장가치에서 차지하는 비중이 증가함에 따라 특허권 취득수와 같은 정량지표를 기초로 연구개발비와 특허권의 가치를 측 정하기 위한 연구들이 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 최근 특허권 취득수와 같은 정량지표의 가치관련성이 지속적으로 감소함에 따라 특허권의 질적 특성을 기초로 특허권의 가치를 평가하고자 하는 새로운 연구들이 관심을 끌고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 특허권의 품질의 대용변수로서 특허권의 범위 및 중요성과 관련된 해외특허 취득여부 및 특허권의 기술집중도에 따라 연구개발비의 가치관련성이 차별화되는지를 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 2000년부터 2015년까지 12,943개 기업-연도 별 자료를 대상으로 특허권의 성과지표에 따라 비용화 연구개발비의 가치관련성이 차별화되는지를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 첫째, 비용화 및 자본화 연구개발비는 유의적인 가치관련성을 가진다. 둘째, 미취득집단과 비교하여 국내 특허권 취득집단의 연구개발비는 증분적 가치관련성이 나타나지 않았 지만, 해외 특허권 취득집단은 증분적인 가치관련성이 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 셋째, 기술집중도에 따른 연구개발비의 가치관련성 분석에서는 국내 특허권 및 해외 특허권 모두에서 연구개발비의 가 치관련성이 차별화되고 있음을 관찰하였다. 이러한 결과는 특허권의 범위 및 기업의 기술경쟁력과 같은 특허권의 질적 특성에 따라 특허권의 가치평가가 차별화되고 있음을 의미한다.

Abstract

Many research works have investigated value-relevance of R&D and patents by using quantitative indexes (acquisition of patents and the number of patents). However, as the value-relevance of quantitative indexes has been diminished, new research works have performed the evaluation of patents based on qualitative characteristics imbedded in the patents. This study is to investigate the additional value-relevance of R & D expenditures interacted with qualitative performance indexes of patent such as the acquisition of overseas patent and the degree of patent concentration. The financial data of 12,943 firm-year observations spanning from 2000 to 2015 is obtained from FN-Guide annual file and patent date is from the Korean intellectual property office and US patent and trademark office. The major foundlings are as followings. First, R & D expenditures have the positive value-relevance, regardless of its R & D type such as R & D assets and expenses. Second, when compared to the group not holding patent, R & D expenditures associated with domestic patents have not shown additional value-relevance, but that associated with international patents have shown significant value-relevance. This results mean that investors realize the fact that international patents are more contributable to the improvement of profitability and firm value than domestic patents and reflect those qualitative factors in the process of pricing R & D and patents. Finally, the value-relevance of R & D expenditures depending on the degree of patent concentration) have been significantly associated with firm values. These results represent that qualitative factors associated with have the positive effect on firm value.
