Abstract
tion of periodontium - alveolar bone, periodontalligament and cementum5-7). Furthermore, it is amaterial on which the cells can keep their healthystates, grow well and obtain firm attachment8-11).For these reasons, MTA is the material of choicewhen the root-end filling material is indicated. Many biologic molecules get involved in woundhealing process by several mechanisms. Growthfactors and cytokines are mediator molecules thathave important roles in tissue development andrepair.12,13) Among the mediator molecules, trans-forming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β 1), fibroblastgrowth factor-2 (FGF-2), and cytokine inter-leukin-6 (IL-6) are one of the critical factors.TGF-β1 is known to be related to the mitogenesisof cells and the remodeling of extracellularmatrix12,14) while FGF-2 has a potent angiogeniceffect15). IL-6 is one of the well-known and plenti-ful inflammatory cytokines16). In this regard, Koh et al.17) studied the cytokineproduction from osteoblastic cells in contact withMTA, and they found that MTA has an up-regu-lating effect on the expression of IL-1α , IL-1β,and IL-6 from osteoblasts. Among the cells that constitute the periapicaltissue, periodontal ligament (PDL) cells are oneof the most abundant and produce many kinds ofgrowth factors and cytokines18). Especially, PDLfibroblasts mainly exist in the periodontal liga-ments that encapsulate the cementum of the root, affect the maintenance and regeneration of theperiodontal tissue by regulating the turnover ofcollagen and alveolar bone remodeling, and con-tact directly with the sealing material when root-end filling procedure is performed
