Abstract

The analogy is often used in science class, and the mapping between analog and target concept is an essential process in learning with analogy. In this study, we investigated mapping errors induced in learning chemistry concepts with some analogies presented in current science textbooks. After 260 7th graders in three middle schools learned with analogies, a mapping test was administered. Seven types of mapping errors were identified: overmapping, mismapping, failure to map, retention of a base feature, impossible mapping, rash mapping, and artificial mapping. ‘Failure to map’ was found to be the most frequent type of mapping errors. The results suggested that learning with analogies can be a difficult process for students, even if analogies are useful. Educational implications to prevent mapping errors in learning with analogies are discussed.
