Abstract
This study explored how students at a science academy for the gifted utilize generative AI during their research & education (R&E) activities and analyzed their perceptions and views on its future applicability. To achieve this, a mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys and individual interviews with 32 third-year students at a science academy located in G city. The analysis revealed that 62.5% of the students used ChatGPT during their R&E activities, primarily for information searching, idea generation, and writing support across various stages of their research. In contrast, 37.5% reported not using ChatGPT, citing concerns about information reliability or a lack of necessity. Among users, patterns of use varied by research stage: usage and perceived usefulness were higher during topic selection and knowledge acquisition, whereas frequency and perceived helpfulness were relatively lower during stages requiring higher-order scientific thinking, such as data interpretation and conclusion drawing. Students positively evaluated ChatGPT’s ability to integrate information and explain complex concepts in simpler terms, and some reported that it helped them generate new ideas or establish creative research directions. However, concerns were also raised about unclear sources, limitations in AI-generated creativity, and increased dependence on the tool. Despite these concerns, many students expressed a willingness to continue using generative AI in future scientific research, reflecting their positive experiences and expectations for continued technological advancement. Overall, the students tended to use ChatGPT selectively rather than uncritically, likely reflecting their prior scientific knowledge and research experience. However, their use remained focused on basic tasks, indicating a gap between their use and the more comprehensive ways scientists employ AI across all stages of inquiry. These findings suggest the need for more structured AI education that fosters critical and autonomous use throughout the scientific research process.
